Meet Our Local Resident Potter Laura Abbey!
Laura Abbey is an Appalachia native. She moved away from Appalachia raising three children and traveling the world. She is an accomplished runner qualifying for the Boston Marathon and winning her age group in multiple ultramarathons. Despite being away from Appalachia, she never lost her love for the wilderness and mountains, she has hiked the Appalachian Trail and Mount Kilimanjaro. She spent time with the Peace Corps, bringing economic development techniques to communities in Namibia. She has now come to Wytheville and wishes to share her knowledge of ceramics, and her passion for fostering community growth with her home region. Stop by the studio to meet her!!
Barrel-Fired Ceramics
Laura’s passion for ceramics began in New Jersey in a local studio. She continued to practice her skill at a nearby college. She trained under a specialist of the Raku process, Ann Tsubota. Laura’s specialty, however, is creating barrel-fired pottery. This process creates a unique smoky color and rugged texture. Check out the gallery
for examples of her work! To request a personalized piece, fill out the contact form.
Mission
To bring the joy of creation to the local community. We invite travelers to experience the artistry and heritage of Appalachia.
House History
The main portion of the house is a log cabin built during the late 19th century. It stands alongside other buildings of that time period on the last few blocks in the Downtown Wytheville strip. These are the few remaining buildings on Main Street which were not burned down during the 1920s Main Street fire. Additions to the house were built during the 1920s. Stop by to have a first-hand look at the town’s history and enjoy experiencing a working ceramics shop.
